I have no excuse for not blogging, except that I haven't taken photos lately and it always seems boring to post with no pictures. Having joined the Iris Society in our area, I discovered that June and July are the busy time, with lots of volunteer hours getting ready for an iris sale this month. So there is that. Not sure it qualifies as an excuse, but I have enjoyed digging and playing in the iris. :~) Otherwise, it's just housework, appointments, square dancing, and general busy-ness.
But I have at least been working on dolls. I went in there and started counting to see how many in-progress dolls I have going. Embarrassing, but I have twenty! I know I should finish the first ones before starting any more, but the most recent ones are mostly Izannah type dolls for the upcoming doll show. There will be three sizes--22", 18", and 15". So I have lots of tiny thumbs to sew in the next few weeks.
Maybe I'll take some hand sewing with me when we go to see my son get married in Oregon in August. It always takes longer than I think it will, so it's best to plan ahead, right?
At any rate, I did get a couple of photos of these that I started in the last few weeks. I work a few hours every day, adding clay to each of them and setting it aside to dry for the next day's additions.
I'm really hungry for autumn weather, so I have a feeling the fabric choices for these bitties will be fall colors.
Cheers!

More finished dolls...
I've just about finished all the things I "had" to do regarding UFDC. Of course, I'd love to have finished the OTHER half of the dolls, but as they work very well in their "in process" stages for the seminar, they're coming along anyway.
But here are two more. I posted Tuxedo Kitty yesterday on FB, and Hugo today.
Somebody once told me that I seldom make a doll with a smile. I realized she was right. I've always been a little leery of smiling dolls (call it the Chucky Factor?), so I set out to challenge myself. These guys are okay...

The Fall Garden...and a garden tour.
I subscribe to Texas Gardener, which helps because the weather and such here makes gardening quite a bit different than it is way north, east, or west of us. For example...forget it in June, July, and August, at least as far south as we are. But we can grow our cold weather stuff all winter, so there's a trade off.
I've cleaned up the veggie garden, hauled all the dead stuff and weeds to the compost pile out back. The hub has promised me a load of compost and a load of cedar mulch for my birthday, so if I get the ground turned this week and some seeds in the ground, it will all be ready for a top dressing of compost and some nice mulch to keep the moister in and discourage weeds.
This week I'll start some pole beans, basil (you can freeze it in zip-top bags for later), a couple of gourds (experimenting w/ growing later in the year) and a couple of winter squashes. Tomatoes for fall and more peppers are going in this week...and of course there are flower seeds to start--the marigolds, sunflowers, etc. that make such gorgeous fall color here once we really do get cooler temps. But most of the veggies need to wait a little while longer to plant. I have a nice tidy chart (that's about the only thing tidy in my garden) spelling out what I want to plant, when, and where.
Today I took pictures of landscaping progress, and then it surprised me to go back to when these beds were freshly dug and rather bare. So this is a picture heavy post, just so you know. :~)

Sept. 5th, 2012. I know, winter/summer comparison is not fair, but it does show how much we've changed it...
Same thing, back of the house, Jan. 2009. They had landscape fabric UNDER the dirt. Nothing grew there at all.
Today, Sept. 5th, 2012. We cut in a sliding door that first winter, and built the deck, the beds, etc.
Took a year to clear out all the white gravel and dig in some new beds...but we did it.
Spring of 2010...new beds along the front...
To the left of the front porch...still working on the gravel clearing detail.
These are those same beds today, along with a much bigger apple tree. Schultz is wondering why we're out in the heat this morning...watering the beds is already done for the day, mom!
In the back, a sky vine on the garden gate, some asparagus and the Peggy Martin roses are the only things still green in the veggie garden at the moment...but that will change soon enough.
Ready to till it up and put in some seeds!
Charlotte's two egg sacks...I can't wait to meet the little ones.
For the first time, we have apples!!!

Pumpkin Girl
Back when I designed a couple of bodies for my "big girls"--the ones inspired by the Greiner dolls and milliner's model type paper maches, I had made three doll bodies. Two of them became Isabella and Anne, but the third just sort of sat around...having not turned out sculpt-wise the way I'd wanted her to at the time. But I went back and revisited her a bit.
She ended up with pumpkin and crackle, with harvest colors and polkadotted stockings and Queen Ann-ish eyes. I like her and have enjoyed her wide-eyed presence. Now I guess I'll list her on Ebay or Etsy and see if someone is as hungry for cool autumn weather as I am.
I know, it's too soon, and I should be happy with whatever season is upon me. But a girl can dream, right?
